Project Research Findings – Website Comparison

Project Research Findings 4

One of a site which is also a non profit organization that helps treat various addictions is Hazelden Foundation (www.hazelden.org). It can be a prototype for National Addiction Management Services (NAMS).

Hazelden Foundation is a non profit organization which offers help to addiction treatment for adults and youth, which includes both extended care and intermediate care, as well as outpatient treatment, aftercare services and a family program.

Comparing the two of them, NAMS and Hazelden, Hazelden has a much better web presence as they are using web 2.0 technologies. Their website also have links which leads to many of their personal social networking sites.  They have a blog which is a place for them to discuss addiction, treatment and recovery. They also have their own corporate YouTube Channel, a Twitter account where they tweet their latest news and updates and a FaceBook group. Besides having social media tools, they also have daily updated information for people to look at and their website also has application forms where people could apply to become volunteers and could receive additional benefits. They also have videos in their site where people can view it and have a minute tour of what the organization provides.

Project Research Findings – Blog

Project Research Findings 3

NAMS can setup a blog for their organization and publish posts so that they can reach their own goals. The advantage of having a blog is that the posts and comments can easily reach out to people and follow due to generally structured conversation posts.

A blog could also allow them to communicate with others and letting other people comments as posts and they also offer a more honest and direct view. It can also help them keep track of visitors they have coming in their site by having a visitor counter which they could keep track if they are people actually visiting their blog and whether they need to plan to let people be more aware of their organization.

By making blogs which is also a micro site, they can focus more on the outside of the organization such as supporting sales and marketing efforts as their main web page is reserved for corporate news.

Project Research Findings – Social Networking Tools

Project Research Findings 2

After doing more research about how non profit organizations can make use of online social networking tools to help them create awareness to people. All these wiki, blogs, and other social tools can also help increase efficient ways to collaborate and share knowledge among workers so whether which line of organization they are in, they were be able to plan and get the information they need for success. In order to do that, they must first find out who their target audiences are before using any of the social networking platforms as they cant own every single one of them. However, being online isn’t enough to create awareness, the organization itself has to be active and keep their audiences engaged. There is also a survey by Social Impact team that  86% of the individuals agreed that an organization’s site and participation in their social media keep their audiences more engaged in its activities. As for National Addiction Management Service (NAMS), their target audiences are quite wide, FaceBook would be a better choice for them to reach out for potential donors, volunteers and such.

They could then use FaceBook as a micro fundraising by implementing a FaceBook widget by “Ammado” which is also just another social network just like FaceBook or MySpace. It’s primary objective is to help people and non profit organization worldwide to raise funds and donate online and besides the online donation capabilities, they also offer giving circles and vouchers.

Project Research Finding – Web 2.0

8 02 2010

Project Research Findings 1

The organization I am focusing on is National Addictions Management Service (NAMS) which was incorporated since August 2008. It is located at the Institute Mental of Health and they have a specialist outpatient clinic and the inpatient Serenity Centre. NAMS is an organization which treats addiction problems such as gambling, and other behavioural addictions.

According to the website that NAMS has set up, they are using web 1.0 and they also stated that their contents are for information purposes only and not to be use for diagnosis purposes. Any concerns regarding health must be checked with a physician for professional advice.

After doing some research about web 2.0, I felt that the organization should implement the web 2.0 technologies as it allows them to interact with other users to change website contents whereas web 1.0 only allows users to passively view information that is provided to them and there is no sharing of information. There is a respond to a recent McKinsey survey which shows that there are many who are interested in this trend and they said that the web 2.0 technologies are strategic and they plan to increase the investments. There is also an online discussion that clarify that companies who are using Web 2.0 technologies has developed a new way of bringing technology into businesses.

According to the McKinsey Global Survey, more than half of the executives who surveyed said they are pleased with the results of their investments for the past 5 years and the companies plan to maintain or increase investments in Web 2.0 technologies in the coming years.

By using Web 2.0 technologies, NAMS can help to improve customer service and solicit customer feedback and also they are able to use the web services, peer to peer networking to communicate with other business partners or clients and companies.

As mention earlier that the website for NAMS state that their contents are for information purposes only and not to be use for diagnosis purposes, I think that they should introduce the E-prescribing system as it is a simply an electronic way of generating prescriptions which utilizes e-prescribing software and a transmission network which is linked to various participating pharmacies.

By introducing E-prescribing, it can reduce patient’s high amount of medication costs and also medication errors such as hand writing illegibility, wrong dosage, or other drug allergy reactions.

Reflection on New Media Landscape

30 12 2009

5 keypoints the speaker mention:

He mention about how one can earn revenue by making blogshops and doing business although it is different from e-commerce due to offline transactions for blogshop but it can save time and also gain experience by putting in our web designing skills into the blogsite.

People can also make blogs and earn revenue such as XiaXue sites by promoting and let others click on the advertisements provided by Nuffnang and also update and provide people with the latest news so they more people will come back and read up and also expand the amount of viewers.

The way to promote or let others know about our own website/blogshop is to spend alot of money on advertisements or one could promote through the net like how some others promote their own business online is by going in forums and posting to let others read up about it.

Another thing that he mention was how people as a web designer themselves can make use of what they learnt in schools and on their own from research to build a site. He also explain how people can build their own site easily and simplify the publication of web content to sites with the content management system.

Another point was also how he started out as a freelance and then going into a full time job becoming a co-founder of Rippelewerkz which is doing design for web, blogs development. He mention about the obstacles to overcome and how the work force life and studying is different as you will get payed when working for others so people will expect more from you in return.

3 Things that inspire me from the lecture:

Able to do freelance job wile studying at the same time

Start up own business by providing services such as web designing  at such young age

Learn about how people can earn much revenue through blogs

Do you think it is useful for a gues speaker to  share its expertise?

Yes it let us learn what they have been through and how it can benefit us in our future.

STRESSLOAD

Literature Review Article: http://mashable.com/2009/07/30/social-networking-overload/

In today’s society, most of us rely on social networking to connect with one another and doing businesses. All of us have the internet and we are very dependent on it now. There are many social networking sites such as Facebook, twitter, Friendster and others. People also blog their stuffs on their own blog and others will give comments about it.

With so many of this social networking sites, most of us just can’t resist ourselves and will just sign up for all these and connect with all of our friends and even strangers. But after some time, we will start to login lesser for some of the sites or not even bother logging in at all. So before signing up for every single of social networking sites, we should always ask ourselves why are we signing up for all these and if we can just join just a site to connect with people you want so that we will not feel overloaded and ignore the ones who are important to us.

By joining the social networking site, we should also consider our purpose in joining so that we connect to users directly like our friends in Facebook, if most of our friends are using it or for businesses which allows communicating of information to people. We could also have multiple networks for instance one to connect with our friends and other for business purposes so it will be organized.

Some of us uses social networking sites to create boundaries from some people so they can post about people and their happenings or their personal information but we shouldn’t post something we are not comfortable about as we never know who might be able to gain access to it. We should also try to divide people we add in our social networks so that we can create boundaries to have more privacy. These are some ways for us to deal with our social networking overload.
